All of the Forums have been great but especially the boat cruise during the Savannah Forum - everyone got to know each other and we met NAEM's own "Michael Jackson."

Being able to contribute to my company, to communities and the environment and leaving a positive conservation legacy for future generations.

3. What do you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
Appreciating how important leadership and networking skills are. Success relies as much – or more – on using those skills effectively, than on knowing the facts and having technical expertise.

Mike Pisarcik

MIKE PISARCIK

1. What is your favorite NAEM memory/ experience?
Taking the cable car to the top of Grouse Mountain followed by dinner in the Observatory Restaurant during the Vancouver Forum. We had great food, good conversation and an overall great time that year.

2. What do you find most rewarding about working in EHS?
The flexibility and the variety of topics that demand attention. In managing environment, for example, we handle everything from air emissions to POTWs. You name it, we are working with it on any given day! I also like that change is constant in EHS - the rules change, the people change, and the environment changes. What remains is the need to deliver strong, clear management of processes that ensure that our world is protected while enabling our businesses to be successful.

3. What do you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
I wish that someone would have taken me aside and explained to me what makes a business successful. I wish that I understood business basics much earlier, including how to read an income statement, and why a balance sheet has to balance.

4. What is your favorite green resource?
My favorite green resource is the internet. I get there using a slight amount of electricity and usually no paper. Virtually everything is available there

You can actually make a profound difference with the welfare of people and the welfare of the environment by working within the system to do the right thing.

My professional colleagues and the internet.

I can go home at night knowing that I am contributing to an effort to leave a decent world for future generations.

3. What do you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?

4. What is your favorite green resource?
High Country News, “For People Who Care About the West.” It’s a small publication with a big impact. Quality journalism and essays about environmental issues in The West.

In general, whether it’s at the board meeting or Forum, the camaradarie to talk and have relationships. I think that I have learned more outside the rooms between meetings than in the rooms.

2. What do you find most rewarding about working in EHS?
With my company, it’s the idea that they want us to be leaders, get us actively involved, and share with others. They want us to be on the cutting edge of environmental issues because it’s constantly changing. Everyone says that they’re the “best”, but we use NAEM to benchmark with other world-class companies to confirm that we truly are the best.

The importance of being a good speaker and my presentation skills.

1. What is your favorite NAEM memory/ experience?
Going to the microbrewery in Montreal several years back. It was one of my first Forums and I met so many great new professional contacts that year. The event included a scenic drive into the "country" on a charter bus, and a warm and toasty place when we got inside, with 100 of my closest friends.

2. What do you find most rewarding about working in EHS?
The evolution of the profession over the last 20 to 25 years. Sustainability issues have come to the forefront and now seem to be taking a more permanent hold, so that concerns about environmental impacts are integrated into business objectives. When I started out, EHS was strictly a technical and regulatory function that has now has become much broader in its implications and opportunities for career growth.

3. What do you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
Everything I know now!

4.What is your favorite green resource?
I recently discovered the website GoodGuide.com which was developed as an independent source of research and information on food and other consumer products. It provides health, safety and nutrition ratings on various products by category based on laboratory analysis and testing, publishes information on how products are made, and a lot of other data to help us all become more educated consumers.
