Get to know your NAEM Staff!

PEOPLE | February 24, 2009 | Outlook: Sunny

The friendships and professional connections you make through NAEM are truly invaluable! We thought we’d share a little bit about ourselves during member appreciation week and in turn we hope that you too will log in to your NAEM Member profile, and share some of your interests and hobbies with us & your fellow members!

We look forward to getting to know you all better this year as we work hand-in-hand to meet your professional needs and continue strengthening the bonds of the NAEM Community!

Carol Singer Neuvelt, Executive Director

I love getting news from: Harvard Business Online, WBCSD, Wired, McKinsey.com, The Environmentalist

Next time you’re in DC, check out: Agraria, located on the Georgetown water front this is a great organic spot for a nice lunch or dinner.

On weekends you can find me: Summer gardening and going to the water/splash parks with my family.

Writer/Guru that influencs me: Shakespeare, Deepak Chopra, Ansel Adams, Larry Brilliant the Executive Director of Google.org, and John Elkington, the founder of SustainAbility.

My favorite NAEM Memory: Having the opportunity to honor all the past NAEM Presidents and Forum Chairs at the Crystal Banquet at the ’07 EHS Management Forum in Vancouver.

Sadaqat Ahmad, Information Technology Manager

I love getting news from: The New Republic's Vine, the Daily Beast, the Economist and Planet Gore.

My favorite new technology or product: Windows 7, which is supposed to use 20% of the energy Windows XP uses.

On weekends you’ll find me: Playing basketball or watching a great movie. Also, probably doing something computer related.

Writer/Guru that influences me: Andrew Sullivan because he's all over the place intellectually, Alexander Hamilton, NBC’s Green-zo, and Vince Vaughn in the Wedding Crashers.

Favorite NAEM Member-related moment: I always enjoy it when members stop by the office

Virginia Hoekenga, Deputy Director

I love reading news from:  NPR, Salon, and Grist for environmental news

Next time you’re in DC, check out: The Tabard Inn Restaurant. With a garden patio in the summer, cozy fireplace in the winter and a locally sourced menu, this is my favorite place to take friends who come to visit.

On weekends you’ll find me: Riding my long board on the biking trails around DC, going to the batting cages, camping, sand volleyball and any activity at the beach or ocean.

Writer or speaker that inspires me: I’m a fan of Paul Hawkin’s books. I’ve also enjoy hearing Andrew Winston’s perspective on corporate environmental issues and I admire Sylvia Earle for her work to bring awareness to the state of our oceans' health.

My favorite NAEM memory: It's a tie between my first Forum in 2002 in Montreal, which included a beer tasting in a castle and our recent Regents Leadership dinner on Grouse Mountain overlooking Vancouver, British Columbia. What can I say, I love Canada!

Brianna Gianti, Membership and Marketing Manager

I love getting news from: the NY Times online, DCist.com and Environmental Leader

Next time you’re in DC check out: Java Green. Their food is fantastic and they feature many great vegan and vegetarian choices.

My favorite green product or website: My favorite “green” website is Proqou. From one simple website, I can easily unsubscribe from hundreds of lists and save myself the headache of getting useless junk mail.

On weekends you can find me: Painting, exercising, walking around and discovering new parts of DC, traveling, or sitting in Meridian Hill park enjoying a book and a nice day.

My Favorite NAEM Memory: It’s tough to choose a favorite but I will say the Forum 15th Anniversary celebration in Vancouver, complete with a band and dancing. Our members sure can dance!

Mike Mahanna, Program Manager

I love getting news from: The NY Times, and the NAEM water cooler.

Next time you’re in DC, check out: The Courthouse farmers market in Arlington. I was skeptical, but there really is a big difference when you have a good, fresh egg.

On weekends you’ll find me: Any excuse to get outside is good for me, but my favorite activity is mountain biking.

My favorite green technology or product: The Sol Light LightCap. It has a solar cell and a light bulb in it which allows you to turn any standard water bottle into a lantern. It’s perfect for when I go camping, or forget to pay my electric bill.

Favorite NAEM Memory: Overindulging on every possible grilled meat at Texas de Brazil with NAEM members at dinner the night before the NAEM Memphis Forum kicked-off this past year.

Hilary Phelps, Membership Services Manager and Forum Liason
